Google Business Profile

The three results above everything else are not your website.

Search a trade and a town in Brainerd and the map sits at the top with three businesses in it. That box is a Google Business Profile, not a website, and it takes a large share of the clicks before anybody scrolls.

This argues against my own product, so let me say it plainly

If you have no Google Business Profile and a limited budget, do not buy a website from me yet. Claim the profile, it is free. Ask your last ten happy customers for a review. Then come back and talk about a site. That order will make you more money than the reverse, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling.

I set the profile up with every website I build, and if the profile is genuinely all you need, I will tell you that and you can do it yourself with the steps below. It costs nothing to claim.

What actually moves it

Four things, in the order they matter.

Not a secret, not a technique, and none of it needs a monthly retainer.

Claim it and fill in all of it

Every field, not the three that are quick. Hours, services, the area you actually cover, real photos of real work. A half filled profile is why a competitor with a worse business outranks you.

Reviews, and keep getting them

This is the big one and it is the one everybody skips because asking feels awkward. Reviews are what make a profile rank. Not your domain name, not your website, and not how much you paid a designer.

The same details everywhere

Your name, address and phone written identically on your site, your profile, Facebook and every directory that has you. Two versions of your phone number across the internet is a real ranking problem and a boring one to fix.

A website that backs it up

Last, not first. A site with a page per service, your town named in the words like a human wrote them, and the same details as the profile. This is where I come in, and it is step four rather than step one.

Being straight

What nobody can promise you.

A guaranteed position

Nobody can guarantee a spot in the map results. It moves with how close the searcher is standing, and it is different for somebody in Baxter and somebody in Crosslake. Anyone guaranteeing you number one is either confused or counting on you not checking.

Instant results

A new profile with two reviews does not outrank a fifteen year old business with ninety. It takes months of doing the boring things. What you can control is that the boring things get done.

Rankings from a website alone

A website helps and it is worth having, but a beautiful site with no profile and no reviews will not put you in the map. If a designer implies otherwise, ask them to explain the map pack and watch what happens.

Anything from buying reviews

Do not. Google is good at spotting them, the penalty lands on the profile you depend on, and around here somebody will notice the names anyway.

Questions

What people ask about local search.

Do I need a website to show up on Google Maps?

No, and that is worth knowing before you spend anything. The map results are driven by your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how close you are to the person searching. A website supports it but does not replace it. Claim the profile first: it is free, it takes an afternoon, and it will do more for a small local business than a website will in its first month.

How do I get into the map results in Brainerd?

Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile, get real reviews from customers you have already made happy, keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere they appear, and post to the profile occasionally. Reviews are the part most businesses skip and the part that moves it most.

Will you do my SEO every month?

No, and I would be careful with anyone who wants to. For a business this size a monthly SEO retainer usually buys a report you cannot verify. Set the site up properly once, get the profile right, and put the monthly money into asking customers for reviews. If you outgrow that advice you will know, and I will tell you.

Want me to look at your profile?

Send me your business name. I will tell you what is missing from the profile and whether a website is actually your next problem, free, in writing.
